Two Victims Identified in the Providence Campus Incident as Authorities Press On With Hunt for Gunman.

The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the weekend's tragic incident on the university campus were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter persisted following the freeing by local law enforcement of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also expressed sympathies on social media, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Remembering her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other person killed was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the Ivy League university, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.

The Shooting Incident

Nine more persons were injured in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Officials stated late Sunday that a 24-year-man detained in a police operation at a lodging about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.

“We have a murderer out there,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”

Community Anxiety

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our city”.

The assailant discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering building on over the weekend, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a authority informed the Associated Press.

Officers that entered the lodging recovered two firearms and two ammunition clips when the individual was arrested, according to reports.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, a single scholar was released from the hospital, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in grave but unchanging health, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.

An educational institution, a independent school in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Additional Memorials

Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and schoolmates and grieve for of his bright future.”
