The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
