An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government rejects these accusations, just as it refutes all charges it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably banned Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that was originally built on harmony has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
