As Beachgoers Ran From Danger, Viral Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many local residents, detected pops echoing around the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Exiting her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the road, speaking to a duo who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a lifeguard, sprinting to Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one moving in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He’s running at something that surely every part of you would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of instances of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, law enforcement and ambulance crews treating dozens of victims.

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many professional lifeguards, said that the staff rose to the occasion from the second the shooting commenced right into late that nighttime.
